When owning a Brittany Spaniel, there are a few common health issues you should be aware of. The breed has a predisposition for some disorders that are thought to be hereditary. Efforts are made by Breeders to eradicate the appearance of these Brittany Spaniel health problems.


Hip dysplasia

This is a progressive disease and will get worse as the dog ages. There is a loose fit between the ball and the socket in the dogs hip. The ligaments holding the ball and socket together are also loose. Over the time as the ball slides out of the socket repeatedly, the disease gets worse and the dog may end up slow and lame.
Brittany Spaniel Health Problems

Retinal dysplasia

This is a disease that can already be present at birth but can also occur later on in the dog’s life due to a viral infection. There are three categories for this disease. The mildest form is a fold that occurs in the retina and its impact on the dogs vision is not significant. The second is a thinning and/or disorganization of the dog’s retina. The dog’s vision is reduced and will remain so for life. The worst category for this disease is when the retina gets detached – this will lead to severe vision loss or complete blindness.

Cerebellar abiotrophy(ataxia)

This occurs when cells in the dog’s cerebellum degenerate after birth. Signs of this disease may include poor balance, a very wide stance, head or body tremors, a stiff gait and a lack of awareness of the position of their feet. In Brittany Spaniels, this disease is diagnosed later in life (older than 6 months).

Lens luxation

This is an inherited disease that usually occurs in ages 4 to 7 years. Normally, the lens is positioned between the iris and the retina of the dog’s eye. With lens luxation, the lens moves away from that position and results in pressure on the dog’s eye. This can lead to glaucoma with time.

Idiopathic epilepsy

This is a genetically transmitted disease that is most likely to show signs from 1 to 3 years of age. The dog will experience an epileptic seizure. The occurrence of this can affect the dogs behavior – rage, confusion, fear.   It may cause the dog to lose consciousness and cause muscle spasms. A dog experiencing mild seizures may look disoriented and confused and look for help from its owner. A dog experiencing a major seizure will be unconscious, have muscle spasms and possibly defecate and urinate during the seizure.
